Over 150 years ago, the true treasure of the Caribbean wasn’t to be discovered in a chest buried on a deserted island, it was to be found in oak barrels stored beneath the Thames. The property of one Alfred Lamb, gentleman and proprietor of a wine and spirit business, it contained Lamb’s Navy Rum. A spirit of his own making, it blended 18 of the Caribbean’s most treasured rums sourced from Trinidad, Guyana, Jamaica and Barbados.
The reason for its concealment under the river Thames was not one of secrecy. Mr Alfred Lamb understood that creating a smooth Rum took time and patience. Which is why he stored his in a cool cellar for 4 years before allowing a drop to be drunk. Luckily for us, Alfred decided it was a secret too good for him to keep and shared it with the Rum drinking world.
Alfred Lamb
Alfred Lamb is one of the greatest names in the history of rum. He was born in 1827, the son of William Lamb, a wine and spirits entrepreneur. At age 22, young Alfred opened his famous wine and spirits business in London, using his cellars under the River Thames to produce his traditional dark rum blend. His method of cask ageing his rum is said to be one of the secrets behind the Lamb’s Navy smooth taste.
The ‘Navy Rum’ moniker was bestowed on Alfred’s prized spirit as it was adopted as the drink of choice by the British Navy and was distributed in rum rations to all aboard Her Majesty’s Royal Navy fleet.
Rum’s origins
Rum takes its name from various slang terms from the 1600’s, including ‘Rumbullion’, ‘Rumbustion’ and ‘Rumbooze’, meaning ‘uproar’ or ‘raucousness’. It was the Navy who coined the phrase a ‘daily tot’, when rum was added to their rations. The daily tot of those days was a twice daily issue of a quarter of a pint of neat rum.
Lamb’s Navy Rum Today
Today, Lamb's Navy Rum is still made to the same exacting standards Alfred Lamb insisted on in 1849, creating a premium quality rum with a smooth clean distinctive taste. By blending fine rums created from the highest quality Caribbean sugar cane, the Lamb’s Navy Rum blend delivers a complex yet smooth taste.
